He has led pioneering studies in new organic reactions and the synthesis of aromatic compounds and natural products widely used in pharmaceuticals. Building on this foundation, he expanded his research into the design and synthesis of nanocatalysts and nanomaterials, achieving internationally recognized accomplishments. His eco-friendly nanocatalyst and carbon-dot synthesis research, utilizing natural products and biomass, has been widely published in world-leading journals with high citation counts. His application-focused research includes photocatalytic reactions, bio-imaging, biosensors, and metal-ion sensing materials, strengthened by extensive global collaborations. Professor CHOI In-ho, Director of the Cell Culture Research Institute, earned degrees from Korea University and Florida State University in the U.S., and previously served as a researcher at the University of Illinois. Over the past decade, he has published over 140 international journal papers, registered 22 patents, and completed six technology transfers. Recognized globally for research in cell culture and natural-substance-based biotechnology, he has led the establishment of the Uiseong Cell-Culture Industrial Complex, laying the foundation for Korea’s cell culture industry. By combining cell culture technology with in-silico and AI-based analysis, he has successfully implemented strategies for high-value utilization of regional natural resources. He now leads AI-based food ingredients and drug development, corporate recruitment, talent education, and research infrastructure projects, strengthening the regional bio-cluster. He also leads the Ministry of Education RISE project ‘K-U City Cell-Culture Program’, contributing significantly to regional innovation ecosystems. Professor Sumanta Sahoo (School of Chemical Engineering) completed his B.S. and M.S. at Vidyasagar University in India and earned his Ph.D. from IIT Kharagpur. He is globally recognized for research on energy storage, ultra-fast synthesis, and electrochemical catalysis using metal oxides, MXene, and graphene-based nanomaterials. His research on microwave-assisted ultra-fast synthesis and performance optimization of MXene, perovskite, and graphene composites has gained international recognition. He has also achieved significant citation impact in bio-convergence application research, including the development of gene-based bioimaging and nanocomposites for photothermal cancer therapy, thereby expanding new research domains across the fields of energy, environment, and bio-convergence. Professor Raji Atchudan (School of Chemical Engineering) earned his B.S. from the University of Madras, M.S. from Annamalai University, and Ph.D. from Anna University. He leads research on simple and eco-friendly synthesis of carbon-based nanomaterials and nanocomposites. His graphene oxide(GO), graphene sheet, carbon-dot(DDs), and carbon–metal-oxide composite synthesis technologies have produced groundbreaking outcomes in energy storage and dye degradation, earning high citation records. He is actively expanding research applications to fields such as bio-imaging, fluorescent inks, and fluorescent sensor development, along with domestic and international collaborations to broaden global research influence. YU is enhancing global research competitiveness through innovation in research infrastructure, strengthened international collaborations, and expanded researcher support.These efforts are evident in YU’s Top 5 domestic ranking for the second consecutive year in the Leiden Ranking. YU also achieved a 100% freshman enrollment rate for 2025, demonstrating high trust among students and parents, while consistently improving university reputation with outstanding evaluation results. This year’s HCR recognition further validates YU’s research excellence and demonstrates the strengthening of its international research impact. Outstanding achievement far exceeding the national average; all candidates passed Demonstrated effectiveness of intensive academic support, including efforts toward educational normalization and tailored instruction Leading the advancement of regional clinical training systems… accelerating innovation in medical education [November 18, 2025] Yeungnam University (YU, President CHOI Oe-chool) announced that all 19 candidates from the College of Medicine successfully passed the 2026 90th National Medical Licensing Examination – Clinical Skills Test, achieving a 100% pass rate and marking a remarkable accomplishment. This exceeds the national average pass rate of 81.8% by a significant margin. Since the introduction of the Clinical Skills Test system in 2010, the YU College of Medicine has consistently recorded pass rates far above the national average, and including this year’s results, has achieved a perfect pass rate in 12 examinations. This year’s outcome is particularly meaningful, as it was achieved despite challenging academic conditions, including a large number of student leaves of absence, through comprehensive university-wide efforts toward educational normalization and enhancement of academic quality. The university leadership actively implemented diverse measures—such as curriculum restructuring and improvements in instructional delivery—to support educational stabilization. The College of Medicine reinforced tailored clinical training programs to strengthen students’ clinical performance capabilities through courses focused on developing clinical competencies, intensive training modules, and specialized clinical skills workshops.Additionally, Associate Dean LEE Geun-mi, serving as the Chair of the Daegu–Gyeongbuk Clinical Performance Evaluation Consortium, has played a leading role in advancing the region’s clinical training and evaluation systems, significantly contributing to strengthening educational competitiveness. Creative volunteer activity proposals to grow together with the local community Spreading the culture of social contribution and realizing the value of sharing Grand Prize to student Lee Dae-hyeon for “Sharing Warm Rice Bowls – A University Student Social Contribution Program Utilizing Local Agricultural Products” [November 14, 2025] Yeungnam University (President CHOI Oe-chool) held the final presentation and award ceremony for the 2025 YU Social Contribution Idea Contest at Sojae Hall on November 7. Conducted as part of the University Innovation Support Project, the contest was organized to promote the culture of social contribution by discovering students’ creative social contribution ideas and fostering volunteer spirit. The contest focused on developing practical support plans for underprivileged groups that university students can implement in connection with their academic majors. Based on written evaluation criteria including logicality, creativity, and feasibility, and PT presentation evaluation criteria including delivery skills, concreteness, public interest, and sustainability, a total of nine teams (individuals) advanced to the finals. In the finals, students examined local community issues from their own perspectives and presented practical implementation strategies applying their major expertise. As a result, LEE Dae-hyeon (junior, Department of Food Economics and Culinary Arts) won the Grand Prize with the proposal “Sharing Warm Rice Bowls – A University Student Social Contribution Program Utilizing Local Agricultural Products.” LEE proposed developing convenient yet nutritious rice bowl menus using ingredients produced by local farms and providing meals to neighbors in need of social care, such as senior citizens living alone. The idea was highly evaluated for going beyond simple food sharing by integrating his major expertise, diagnosing social and economic issues, and adding the values of emotional connection and regional cooperation.The Story Makers team, consisting of four students from the Department of English Language & Literature, won the Excellence Award with “English Theater Volunteer Activities for Little Actors.” The educational volunteer program aims to improve language skills and confidence among local children and enhance cultural understanding by adapting literary works into English theatrical performances. In addition, nine teams received awards, including the Grand Prize, one Excellence Award, three Merit Awards, and four Encouragement Awards. LEE Dae-hyeon said, “Sharing a warm meal made with local agricultural products is not merely volunteer work but a practical act of growing together with the region,” and added, “I hope to continue participating in various social contribution activities as a YU student.” JUNG Jin-young, Director of the YU Social Contribution Center, said, “This contest was a meaningful opportunity for students to independently recognize social issues and propose concrete solutions,” adding, “YU will continue to strengthen support and education so that student-centered social contribution activities can spread sustainably.” The YU Social Contribution Center, which hosted the contest, will continue to expand social contribution programs based on ideas contributed by university members and promote various initiatives to grow together with the region and build a community that lives in harmony.

"Become the leaders who will guide the Republic of Korea…" Senior and junior alumni unite to support newcomers entering society A mentoring venue with more than 270 participants, including senior mentors and newly employed graduates [November 25, 2025] Distinguished alumni of Yeungnam University (YU, President CHOI Oe-chool) who are active in various sectors nationwide gathered at Seoul Dragon City Hotel at 7 p.m. on November 20. They came together to celebrate and support junior alumni who have recently entered the workforce and begun their careers in the metropolitan area. Hosted by the Yeungnam University Alumni Association in the Seoul Metropolitan Area (Chairman PARK Jeong-gwan), the Cheonma Career Alumni Welcome Event celebrated its 12th anniversary this year with great success. First launched in 2012, this annual event has become a unique YU alumni tradition in which senior alumni personally encourage and mentor juniors who are taking their first steps into professional life. More than 270 YU alumni filled the venue, including over 100 newly employed alumni who began work in Seoul and the metropolitan area this year. YU ranks 2nd nationwide in Mathematics & Computer Science and Life & Earth Sciences University’s research strength stands out in global research quality evaluation Continues strong performance in domestic and international university rankings, proving global competitiveness [November 6, 2025] Yeungnam University (YU, President CHOI Oe-chool) has once again demonstrated its research excellence, ranking among the Top 5 universities in Korea for the second consecutive year in the 2025 Leiden Ranking, a global university evaluation focused on research quality. In the latest ranking announced by Leiden University in the Netherlands, YU placed 5th in Korea based on the proportion of the top 10% most-cited SCI papers (PP Top 10%, Full counting, No minimum) published between 2020 and 2023.The Leiden Ranking evaluates universities solely on the citation impact of international academic publications, excluding qualitative factors such as reputation or publication volume.This year’s assessment included 1,594 universities worldwide that published at least 800 international papers over the past four years, with 52 Korean universities listed. By field, YU ranked 2nd nationwide in Mathematics & Computer Science, maintaining its top-tier position for more than a decade. In Life & Earth Sciences, YU rose significantly in the global ranking from 365th last year to 221st worldwide and 2nd in Korea. Alumni and students come together under the theme “Pharmacists of YU: Meeting the Future” KRW 120 million in development funds donated in honor of the milestone Celebrating 70 years of legacy and pledging a new leap forward [November 5, 2025] The College of Pharmacy at Yeungnam University (YU, President CHOI Oe-chool) celebrated its 70th anniversary, bringing together alumni and current students to reaffirm the college’s commitment to future growth and development. The commemorative events consisted of two main programs—“Pharmacists of YU: Meeting the Future” and “Cultural Festival with YU Pharmacists”—held at the YU College of Pharmacy complex on October 31 and November 2. Global cultural exchange festival held on YU campus, October 28–29 International students from 81 countries participated in cultural sharing, experience programs, and essay presentations Country booths, sharing programs, and environmental campaigns strengthened ties with the local community and global networks [October 30, 2025] Yeungnam University (YU, President CHOI Oe-chool) successfully hosted the 2025 YU Global Culture Festival from October 28 to 29 at the Cheonma Gate area and the LEE Si-won Global Convention Hall of the Cheonma Art Center on campus. The festival was organized by the YU RISE Specialized University Project Group and coordinated by the Office of International Student Services, with participation from regional organizations and partners including Gyeongbuk Technopark, K-Dream Foreigner Support Center, clothing company MINUET, and professional career consulting institutions. In collaboration with the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Regional Headquarters of the Korea Environment Corporation, the festival also featured a global environmental culture program, promoting interaction between international students and the local community under the theme of a “Global Culture Festival in Partnership with the Community.” During the International Fair held at the Cheonma Gate area over the two days, international students from 81 countries showcased traditional clothing, food, and crafts, actively engaging with visitors. The student associations from China, Vietnam, and Mongolia introduced their respective cultures, while students from the Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul (PSPS) operated multicultural experience booths. The YU Museum offered a traditional Korean hanbok experience, and both the Graduate School and Korean Language Institute ran academic counseling booths for international students. Gyeongbuk Technopark and K-Dream Foreigner Support Center provided immigration and employment consulting services, and professional career consulting organizations offered résumé reviews and interview image coaching. The Youth Hope Y-STAR Project Group hosted an art IP donation pop-up, and the Bukbu-dong Community Service Center provided local living information to support student settlement. Local clothing brand MINUET contributed through clothing donations, and a university-operated sharing booth distributed household goods donated by faculty and students to international students, adding a warm community spirit to the event. Meanwhile, the Korea Environment Corporation attracted strong attention from participants with environmental sharing markets and upcycling craft workshops. On the second day, the Global Communication Festival took place at the LEE Si-won Global Convention Hall. Ten international students who made it to the final round presented personal essays on topics such as study abroad experiences, challenges in job-seeking, and settling in Gyeongsangbuk-do, receiving enthusiastic responses from the audience. Around 1,000 members of the YU community joined the event, enjoying a time of healing and communication while walking across campus A variety of programs held, including trekking, cultural booths, and busking performances at Cheonma Honors Park A venue for unity among faculty, staff, students, and their families [November 4, 2025] Yeungnam University (YU, President CHOI Oe-chool) held the 2025 YU Campus Fall Trekking event on November 1 across its campus. The event brought together about 1,000 members of the YU community, including professors, staff members and their families, enrolled students, international students, and medical staff from the YU Medical Center. It served as an opportunity to foster communication and unity among the university community. After President CHOI's opening remarks and warm-up exercises, participants walked along a 4 km trekking course connecting the College of Business Administration building, Cheonma Honors Park, Love Road, and the Folk Village, taking in the autumn scenery of the campus for about one hour.A barefoot walking section along the route received positive responses, and Cheonma Honors Park featured busking performances and a treasure hunt event organized by students from the College of Arts and student clubs, adding to the festive atmosphere. This year’s event particularly drew attention with cultural exchange booths operated directly by international students. Global Saemauler Festival Unites Students through Traditional Games, Fashion Shows, and Music Students Present Speeches on “What PSPS Means to Me” and “My Life in Korea” Participants Enjoyed Traditional Korean Games and Performances Showcasing Global Cultures [October 21, 2025] Yeungnam University (YU, President CHOI Oe-chool) held the “2025 Saemaul Spirit Korean Speech Contest & Global Saemauler Festival” on October 17. The Saemaul Spirit Korean Speech Contest, held in the morning at the Cheonma Art Center Chamber Hall, featured nine students from nine countries, including Indonesia, Myanmar, Malawi, and China.Each participant delivered a Korean-language speech on one of the following topics: “What PSPS Means to Me,” “My Life in Korea,” or “How to Apply What I’ve Learned at PSPS to My Home Country.” <Winners of Saemaul Spirit Korean Speech Contest> SOE SI THU MIN from Myanmar won first place in the competition. She shared, “I’m happy that organizing and presenting my thoughts in Korean has improved my language skills. It was a valuable experience that deepened my understanding of Korea and the meaning of the Saemaul Spirit.” Following the Korean Speech Contest, the Global Saemauler Festival took place in the afternoon at the Cheonma Art Center Exhibition Hall. Participants engaged in team activities inspired by the Saemaul Spirit of sharing, volunteerism, and creativity, such as games and quizzes. They also enjoyed traditional Korean games like tuho (arrow throwing), jegichagi (shuttlecock kicking), and arm wrestling. The festival continued with performances of traditional dances, songs, and a multicultural fashion show, fostering cultural exchange and mutual understanding among students. Dean LEE Jeong-ju of PSPS who organized the event, said, “This event gave international students a meaningful opportunity to express themselves in Korean and gain confidence and a sense of accomplishment. Beyond being a language contest, it became a platform for learning about the Saemaul Spirit and Korean culture while sharing and understanding each other’s traditions.” He added, “I hope this experience will serve as a valuable foundation for the students’ future studies and their contributions to community development when they return to their home countries.” Established in November 2011, the Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul aims to nurture experts in Saemaul-based international and regional development among public officials, policymakers, and public sector professionals from developing countries. To date, 1,030 students from 77 countries have enrolled, and as of October 2025, 126 students from 26 countries are studying at PSPS. After graduation, many return to their home countries to serve in government agencies and international development organizations, applying the Saemaul Spirit as global leaders driving sustainable development.

Secures KRW 3 billion in government funding Leads medical talent development for regional healthcare and bio-health industries through educational innovation Also selected for the “Undergraduate Convergence Physician-Scientist Program,” establishing a full-cycle training system [October 17, 2025] Yeungnam University (YU, President CHOI Oe-chool) announced on the 16th that its College of Medicine has been awarded the highest S Grade in the Ministry of Education’s Medical School Education Innovation Support Project, securing KRW 3 billion in funding. The evaluation covered 39 medical schools and one graduate school of medicine nationwide, with only about six institutions earning the S Grade, highlighting YU’s national excellence in medical education innovation. The Medical School Education Innovation Support Project evaluates universities that collaborate with local governments to develop and submit innovation plans tailored to regional conditions and educational needs. The Ministry of Education and the RISE Committee comprehensively assess universities based on criteria such as medical education innovation, regional governance establishment, normalization of medical education, and performance management systems, and assign grades accordingly. YU’s College of Medicine (Dean: WON Kyu-jang) presented key strategies in this project, including: ▶AI-based digital medical education innovation, ▶Enhanced personalized career and learning support for students, ▶Establishment of regionally connected governance, ▶Creation of a talent development system that extends from admission to graduation, and ▶Formation of a global-local (glocal) learning ecosystem for cultivating global medical talent. Through these initiatives, YU aims to build a future-oriented model of medical education innovation and create a sustainable, regionally grounded medical education environment. In particular, YU’s College of Medicine has extensive experience in national research initiatives such as the Convergence Physician-Scientist Training Project, Regional Hub Innovative Physician-Scientist Joint Research Program, the Medical Research Center (MRC) Project supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Research Foundation of Korea, and the Regional Leading Research Center (RLRC) initiative. Leveraging this experience, the college was recently selected for the 2025 Undergraduate Convergence Physician-Scientist Program, making it the only institution in Korea with a comprehensive, full-cycle training system that spans undergraduate, graduate, and clinical education.With these achievements, YU’s College of Medicine now concurrently operates both the Medical School Education Innovation Support Project and the Undergraduate Convergence Physician-Scientist Program, reaffirming the excellence of YU’s medical education and its affiliated hospital. YU is expected to become a central institution for fostering physician-scientists and key convergent professionals in the national bio-health industry. President CHOI Oe-chool stated, “This selection represents a meaningful recognition of our university’s strong commitment to educational innovation and marks a pivotal moment for the future of medical education.
